Alchemy Desk

In 2024, I had the opportunity to undertake a project that allowed me to create a still-life composition. Drawing on my love for history, I chose to showcase the desk of an alchemist. This setting, rich in detail and atmosphere, reflects the essence of an ancient alchemist's study. By incorporating elements such as an open book with intricate diagrams, various tomes, scrolls, sketches, and a collection of alchemical tools, I wanted to create a scene that not only illustrates the study of alchemy but also evokes a deep sense of historical intrigue and intellectual curiosity. Along with this project, I wrote a research paper exploring how environments reflect an individual's personality, and I utilized this research to create the scene above!

I was responsible for all aspects of the project except the 3D models which were sourced from Daz3D, Substance 3D Assets library and CGtrader.

The spaces we inhabit - homes, workplaces, and other social settings - are all extensions of who we are as individuals. Are personal spaces serve as an outlet for our self-expression and by creating a unique scene that reflects someone, it can give the viewer hints of who that person is and their personality.
Research
The initial phase of this project involved thorough research into the intricate connection between environments and personalities. People's surroundings, be it their snug homes or bustling workplaces, act as mirrors of their inner selves. Every detail, from their chosen colors to furniture arrangement, serves as evidence of their identity. By delving into their interior design choices and color preferences, we gain insight into their personalities and observe how they express themselves through their surroundings.
Layout
The GIF on the left showcases various stages in my composition creation process. Drawing from my research, I wanted to portray a personality comfortable in a clean environment yet capable of navigating through creative messiness, as seen in the stained pages beneath the mortar and pestle. I also incorporated an open book and an assortment of other books, scrolls, and sketches to help depict the personality of someone characterized by a strong desire to learn.
Surfacing
The GIF on the right reveals a few key moments in my surfacing process. In crafting this scene, I opted for an earthy color scheme, emphasizing a link with nature and a preference for tranquility and simplicity. The warm tones of brown, green, and soft orange evoke a sense of being immersed in the natural environment, hinting at an appreciation for its beauty and the simple joys it offers. These colors resonate with individuals who seek solace and draw creative inspiration from outdoor surroundings.
Lighting
The GIF on the left showcase various stages in my lighting process. When lighting the scene, my aim was to incorporate lighting reminiscent of an early morning sunrise. The soft, warm glow associated with a sunrise suggests an appreciation for renewal and optimism, reflecting an outlook oriented towards new beginnings, growth, and positivity. This choice of lighting hints at a deep connection to nature, as sunrises often evoke feelings of awe and wonder. Ultimately, the lighting speaks to an individual who embraces the beauty of the natural world and seeks to infuse their space with a sense of hope and liveliness.
